Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into various objects, most of which are found in nature, such as animals or plants.

It was thought to be invented in China centuries ago, and brought to Japan by Buddhist monks. 'Ori' means 'folding' and 'kami' means 'paper'. It later got changed to 'gami'.

This means that although it is a paper craft, it is only to be made from intricate folding skills, and not via cutting, gluing, taping, etc.

The base is a perfectly square sheet of colorful, thin paper, often washi paper. Any paper can do, as long as the shape is dimensionally-even all the way around, and thin enough to fold easily.

Though most origami 'animals' (and folded sculptures) tend to be just 1 sheet of paper, larger scale [and more detailed] ones can be made of many smaller paper sculptures displayed together. This is known in the artsy world as 'modular origami' and it is allowed for pieces to be attached to one another for display purposes, such as in a gallery.
